Quick recap
Sue Ellson conducted a comprehensive LinkedIn for Careers workshop as part of National Careers Week, covering profile optimization, networking strategies, and best practices for job seekers. She explained the importance of completing LinkedIn profiles thoroughly, updating profile URLs, and using keywords effectively in headlines and summaries to improve search visibility. Sue demonstrated how to backup profiles, manage settings, and engage with the platform through regular posting and commenting. She advised against using AI tools for resume writing and emphasized the importance of manual keyword optimization. The session included practical demonstrations of profile sections, statistics tracking, and content sharing strategies, with Sue offering follow-up coaching services at a discounted rate for attendees.

LinkedIn for Careers Session
Sue welcomed participants to a LinkedIn for Careers session as part of National Careers Week. She addressed a question from Timothy about HR professionals ignoring job inquiries, explaining that many HR roles focus on compliance rather than recruitment, and suggested connecting with decision-makers directly or getting referrals. Sue then introduced herself, sharing her background in banking, writing, and LinkedIn consulting since 2008, and mentioned her recent book “LinkedIn for Me and My Career of Business.” She concluded by sharing her social media metrics and encouraging participants to connect with her on LinkedIn.

LinkedIn Workshop for Careers
Sue introduced a National Careers Week workshop on LinkedIn for careers, emphasizing the importance of a complete LinkedIn profile for appearing in search results and securing opportunities. She outlined the workshop’s structure, including her “Setup, Shine and Surprise” methodology, and encouraged participants to review the LinkedIn user agreement and policies. Sue also requested feedback through a survey and reviews to help improve future sessions.

LinkedIn Security and Backup Practices
Sue demonstrated how to find and share the date when joining LinkedIn, which can help identify potential fraudulent connections. She explained LinkedIn’s verification process using a third-party app called Persona, but warned against using it due to privacy concerns and issues with profile name changes. Sue then showed how to back up LinkedIn profiles by saving them as PDFs and downloading data archives every six months, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a record of connections for networking purposes.

LinkedIn Metrics for Career Development
Sue presented key LinkedIn statistics to track for career development, including network size, followers, profile views, search appearances, weekly actions, skill votes, and recommendations. She demonstrated how to access and monitor these metrics through LinkedIn’s analytics features. Sue also explained how to customize a LinkedIn URL to optimize search results and digital presence, while emphasizing the option to hibernate an account rather than closing it permanently.

LinkedIn Profile Optimization Guidance
Sue provided guidance on LinkedIn account management and profile optimization. She advised keeping multiple email addresses in the account to prevent duplicate accounts and enable two-factor authentication, while being mindful of social media policies. Sue emphasized the importance of having a professional profile photo with energy and enthusiasm, and discussed best practices for background images. She also began explaining how to optimize the headline section of a LinkedIn profile, using a search example for a senior project manager in construction.

LinkedIn Profile Optimization Strategies
Sue demonstrated how to optimize LinkedIn profiles for better visibility, focusing on including relevant keywords in headlines, job titles, and the About/Summary sections. She emphasized the importance of using specific keywords that potential employers might search for, suggesting resources like myfuture.edu.au for research. Sue also addressed a question about identifying scam job postings, advising against relying solely on advertised jobs and recommending networking and referrals as alternative job search strategies.

LinkedIn Profile Optimization Guidance
Sue provided guidance on optimizing LinkedIn profiles, emphasizing the importance of using keywords, avoiding ageism, and structuring content effectively. She advised listing skills, achievements, and tasks in specific ways, using present tense for all abilities and past tense for achievements. Sue also highlighted the significance of updating the headline and URL, and suggested including contact details and a call to action. She noted that while a comprehensive profile update can take up to 10 hours, even minor improvements like updating the headline and URL can be beneficial.

LinkedIn Profile Optimization Strategies
Sue discussed strategies for optimizing LinkedIn profiles, emphasizing the importance of filling out all available sections, including education, skills, and endorsements. She highlighted the value of short courses and micro-credentials in advancing careers, and encouraged participants to endorse colleagues’ skills and request recommendations strategically. Sue also advised being mindful of company policies regarding recommendations and emphasized the benefits of building a strong online presence while still employed.

LinkedIn Engagement and Networking Strategies
Sue provided guidance on optimizing LinkedIn engagement and profile usage for career development and networking. She recommended engaging with content through comments and reactions, particularly using the “support” reaction, and suggested posting content no more than three times weekly. Sue advised using LinkedIn’s notification bell feature to follow key industry contacts and organizations, and emphasized the importance of networking by connecting with colleagues and attending events. She also recommended using LinkedIn’s job search features, including the “Open to Work” function and informational interviews, while cautioning that job searching should involve multiple strategies simultaneously.

LinkedIn Profile Optimization Workshop
Sue conducted a LinkedIn workshop, providing recommendations for profile optimization and engagement strategies. She recommended connecting with contacts, updating profiles regularly, and engaging with content weekly or monthly. Sue offered a $50 discount on her services for workshop attendees who book before May 15th and encouraged participants to fill out an evaluation form. When asked about AI in job applications, Sue advised against relying on AI tools, suggesting manual review of job descriptions and profiles for better results.

Packing two hours into a one hour video is great for people like me who can’t keep up anyway and will multiple-pause the replay later on while working through the exercises. No advice comes to mind but it did answer a few important questions for me up front.
Thakyou so much for a very informative, substantial session packed into a short time.
Little mention of AI supports to reduce time/effort and increase engagement. Any reason for this? Any recommendations for effective use/apps etc? Answer: Unfortunately I do not recommend AI supports. Firstly, most of them are against the LinkedIn User Agreement. Secondly, they are often too generic and not aligned with your purpose and they don’t make use of the lived experience I have had with the platform. The main goal of any user of LinkedIn is to be extremely clear on what your purpose is and then aligning all of your efforts with that. When you work with a LinkedIn Specialist, we can cherry pick your best options as we have trialled them first.
