You Yangs Yearning Poem

By Sue Ellson

From afar
Your presence holds
The memory of people
And all their souls

Your rock so firm
Your divets for drink
Your luscious view
In whose arms I sink

I see your water
But I drink my own
A holy site
For wind that’s blown

The stories you’ve heard
Your trees and bushes
A diverse vista
That fulfils all wishes

From bay to plain
From mountain to city
A creation beacon
For true ceremony

As I leave
Your sacred space
My You Yangs yearning
Blesses me with grace

In 2016, I was fortunate to spend many fabulous days and nights in Clifton Springs near Geelong staying in a property on the top of a cliff, overlooking Port Phillip Bay and I could see the You Yangs (mountains) in the distance whilst I was writing my first three non-fiction books. The You Yangs inspired me in a way that I cannot quite explain.

It took until 19 October 2024 for me to visit them on a Parks Victoria organised bush walk. They were even more spectacular than I could have ever imagined. I put a Facebook post online with a range of pictures of trees, a native plant exclusive to the area and indigenous tobacco with stories about how indigenous ancestors described the mountains as male and female and various trees as males, females and children.

This special place has created a yearning within to revisit either in person or in my thoughts as it gave me a such a strong sense of grace. Every time I pass them as I leave Melbourne, I am reminded of their spiritual significance to generations of people. I hope you have a chance to enjoy them too one day! With love, Sue Ellson 🙂
