I Choose You Poem

My choice is my choice
If I choose you, I choose you
Please don’t make my choice for me

As the end of the year approaches, we can look back and think about some of our choices, but we also need to accept responsibility for some of the choices we have made for other people.

This year, I can’t help wondering if a person I met made a choice for me on my behalf because they didn’t think that they were worthy in some way. That somehow I would be better off if they were not in my life.

I truly understand that we can think we are doing the right thing by being self-sacrificing or suffering alone or working through our past before giving our time to someone else.

But I can’t help thinking in this case that I have had my choice taken away from me. I chose this person. I wanted to spend time with this person. I was happy to wait and I was willing to go on the journey. But they chose to end it.

Anyway, there is not much more I can do but reflect on our shared experience and remember the joy and remind this person that I am here if or when they are ready.

However, I would like to suggest that if you are catching up with people over the holidays, remember that these people have chosen to be there and to see you.

Even if you do not feel as if you belong or should belong, remember that they chose to be there. Don’t make a choice on their behalf. Be gracious and enjoy their company.

Happy holidays and all the best for 2019. With love, Sue Ellson 🙂
