LONGEST TIME IN A JOB // Brigitte Duclos and I discussed the topic of how long people stay in a job and whether they would find it difficult to get another job if they stayed in a job for a long time 📻 ABC Radio Melbourne 774AM.
Selected highlights include:
✅ a lot of reasons for staying in a job a long time including a sense of purpose, strong relationships, supportive work environment, feeling valued and encouraged
✅ Gallup State of the Global Workplace report suggesting that 87% of people are less likely to leave if they’re actively engaged at work
✅ issues with staying in the same job depends on what you plan to do next
✅ making sure you can convey transferable skills if changing roles
✅ around 40% of people (in Australia) stay in their job between one and four years
✅ people over 65, only 1.1% of them will actually change jobs
✅ changing jobs depending on age, life circumstance, context, industry
✅ health and social services and accommodation and food having more casual jobs
✅ my grandmother slowing down at 90 when she stopped playing lawn bowls
✅ keeping yourself up to date in your career
✅ building networks over time
✅ being retrenched after many years affecting your sense of identity
✅ losing a job just before Christmas
It was great to hear stories from various people who had spent many years (decades) in the one workplace.
Thanks to Producer Virginia Millen for reaching out!
You can listen to my part between 00:07:02 and 00:13:04
