What to do on LinkedIn when your job role ends

By Sue Ellson

What are the four things you need to do on LinkedIn when your current job role ends?

Step 1. Mention the month and year that that role has finished.

Step 2. Add in a new role. Now, if you’re not currently working in the job title, mention Career Research and the job titles you’d like to go for.

In the Employer section, mention Various and Date from now, and then in the Description box, you can talk to all the things that you’re doing, which may include networking, researching, studying, as well as any of the keywords that you want to be found for because the algorithm favours people who are currently working.

Step 3. Change your primary email address to your personal email address.

Don’t forget to not remove any previous work email address.

I’ll explain why in the link below.

And Step 4. Download your data and start reconnecting with all the people in your network.

Thanks and bye for now.

LinkedIn Add Career Break Option – yes or no?

I recommend the Career Research option rather than the ‘Career Break’ option on LinkedIn. It is important not to leave gaps on your LinkedIn profile because people can become suspicious about what you were doing during that timeframe and the LinkedIn search results prefer people who are currently ‘working.’

The Career Research option can be changed once you have secured a new role. Add this in as soon as your role ends rather than going on a holiday and coming back to job search. It is better to start looking for work immediately and then if you secure a role, let them know you can start in four weeks and go on a holiday then without worrying about your finances!

There are four reasons why you do NOT remove an email address from your LinkedIn account:

  1. It prevents you from creating a duplicate LinkedIn Account
  2. It prevents someone else from using that email address and creating a LinkedIn account (or impersonating you)
  3. It allows LinkedIn to match you with possible LinkedIn Connections (if a person syncs LinkedIn with their contacts)
  4. It allows you to access your account via another email address if your other email address fails

By way of example, I helped one client regain access to their account by going back to a previous employer and re-starting the email address so that they could log back in when they lost their password and had no other way of accessing their account without scanning their passport through the Persona third party tool.

How to download your data from LinkedIn (including a list of your Connections).

You can download your data via this link https://www.linkedin.com/mypreferences/d/download-my-data and then once you receive the email from LinkedIn, click the link and download the files immediately. Look at your list of Connections and either re-engage with them or look at where you have worked or studied in the past and try and find those people on LinkedIn and connect. Networking can be a great way to find new work, as up to 90% of jobs are never advertised and you can go looking at organisations that are close to home or aligned with your values.
