LINKEDIN PROFILE // Why should you create your own LinkedIn Profile? 🤔

As I say in my ⭐LinkedIn for me book📘

➡️ Number one, you will be searched for online and LinkedIn is highly optimised for your name.

➡️ Number two, according to the LinkedIn User Agreement, only you can log in to your account.

➡️ Number three, it’s a record of your achievements and impacts. This is great preparation for behavioural interview questions and also for people looking at your LinkedIn profile considering you for a promotion.

➡️ Number four, it’s a handy reference point and validation tool. You can go back and check what you’ve done in the past and also people can check out those recommendations and skill endorsements.

➡️ And number five, it can help you attract opportunities, provided you fill in all the details.

Remember, if you don’t tell, you can’t sell.

4.1 Why You Need To Complete Your Own LinkedIn Profile
I cannot overstate the importance of COMPLETING YOUR OWN LINKEDIN PROFILE. Yes you! I want to make reading this book
worthwhile for you!!

Some of my clients and students have been reluctant to put their details online, but the reality is that most decision-makers will search for online content about you before meeting you online or in person, so you need to
be findable and verifiable.

The best word of mouth referral could be worth nothing if the person receiving that referral cannot verify your details. If they can’t find you online, they may never contact you at all. People without an online presence can sometimes be considered suspicious or out-of-date.

Please let me remind you that you only need to publish what feels comfortable for you. I insist that it be honest but it can be massaged to read better and focus on the best and most relevant aspects of your story. If you tell your story adequately, you only need to tell your story once!

If you feel awkward talking about yourself, ask for some help. A lot of my clients tell me that they find it easier to write about someone else rather than about themselves. If this applies to you, try working with someone to produce your content or work on an exchange basis with someone else.

In my view, we lost our privacy in the 20th century – as soon as our information started going online. Now that we live in an online world, keeping a record of our achievements or impacts and tasks online is valuable for a variety of reasons. Firstly, five years from now we are likely to forget most of what we are doing today, especially with the current rate of technological change.

Secondly, once our story is online, we don’t have to keep repeating it over and over again to each new person we meet. It can be a handy reference point and validation tool. This is very helpful for people who have made a significant career shift and those nosy people wanting to know how you got to your current role or whether they should value your contribution at work. Yes, even people at parties have been known to check you out online before talking to you in detail. Parents often check out details of their child’s school teacher.

Thirdly, it helps you attract opportunities. All of this information on your LinkedIn Profile can be filled with keywords that search queries can use to identify your value and help you appear in relevant search results.

For example, at the very beginning of my career, I helped discover fraudulent banking transactions. Many years later, a recruiter contacted me for a role associated with finding and preventing fraudulent behavior via my LinkedIn Profile. The word ‘fraud’ was written once in my LinkedIn Profile from a role that I finished many years prior, but it was enough to
help me be found, contacted and asked to apply for the role.

Remember that LinkedIn is essentially a huge database and if you don’t put the words in, you won’t be found in a search query for those words. I often say that if you ‘don’t tell, you can’t sell.’ This is very different to the past where you wouldn’t reveal any information to a prospect until you had the sale.
