Connection Poem

Connection Poem By Sue Ellson

Connection Poem

By Sue Ellson

Can you be connected
To nature, sea or sky
Or is it a construct
That we are meant to try

Can connection and meaning
Make our life complete
Do we need it with humans
Who sadly lie and cheat

Where is the ultimate fix
That puts us into flow
Or do we have to bear
Whatever makes us grow

Could the deepest well
Be hiding right within
Or is our every outreach
The yang to any yin

To truly be connected
To life’s greatest possibility
The sweetest source of love
Comes from what we choose to see

We can still be discerning
And call out what is wrong
But we can also be aware
Of how we can be strong

For when we receive the baton
That life has given us
We can succumb to the fear
Or live with gentle trust

In a moment of crisis
We could wallow and fret
But if we continue on
Time will help us reset

And then a moment will appear
And suddenly we are fine
The connection we have sought
Is ultimately in our mind

When I look at the majority of the projects I have undertaken since 1994, the one’s that have been truly values driven and aligned with how I see the world have a common thread of ‘connection.’

Connecting people via networks, education, publishing, consulting and more.

So that is where I started when I wrote this poem, with the word ‘connection.’

But then it got me thinking about how we get through every day, how we overcome each challenge and who we have around us.

I don’t have the typical range of options close by (family, extended family, work colleagues or a partner) but I do have my children and some amazing personal and professional friendships that sustain me in many profound ways.

Ultimately, I can choose to see my life negatively or positively. Although my heart feels like it is in the right place, my mind can go off the beaten track into very muddy puddles every now and then.

That also made me think about someone else I know and the challenges they are facing right now – and the courage they need to get through their personal difficulties. Relying on ‘time’ feels quite inadequate, but after a lot of experience, I am well aware that it resolves so much. Seneca said, ‘Time heals what reason cannot.’

I guess writing this poem was a reminder to check in with what my mind is actually thinking when I feel ‘disconnected.’ I hope it gives you some ideas about where ‘connection’ is possible in your life too. With love, Sue Ellson 🙂
