Retaining Top Workers

By Sue Ellson

Research by SEEK has identified what appeals to people by industry with their ‘Laws of Attraction‘ Tool (from a survey of 9,564 people in 2023) and it includes items like:

✅ Work-life balance
✅ Salary and compensation
✅ Working environment
✅ Job location
✅ Management
✅ Job security and market position
✅ Organisation
✅ Career development
✅ Colleagues and co-workers
✅ Company reputation
✅ Corporate social responsibility
✅ Company size

Back in the early part of my career, it was all about the job title and the organisation name.

LinkedIn has taken a ‘Skills’ focus more recently – which is why you can nominate your top skills in the following sections on your LinkedIn Profile:

✅ About
✅ Experience (each role)
✅ Education (each course)
✅ Licences and Certifications (each one)
✅ Skills (maximum of 50 that you can sort)

Where do I think people are heading?

➡️A combination of flexibility, remuneration and alignment.

These are values-driven factors. I also believe that the evergreen ‘appreciation for the effort you put in’ is also a big factor.

My personal favourite is ‘working close-to-home.’

Let’s face it, most of us can upgrade our skills throughout our working life.

I also believe that because so many of us live a secular life, without a faith or religion to guide our choices, that we are searching for meaning through our creative pursuits.

My hope is that more people will include these creative activities as part of their working journey and potentially earn some of their income from them as well.

Let’s face it, technology is changing all of our jobs – and many of them are more cognitively intense than they have been in the past.

A creative interest allows us to take our foot off the gas occasionally.

Of course there will still be plenty of people who think pay, promotion or privilege!

Here’s to creating a future that works for everyone!
