MY 2025 REWIND // What happens when a Career Development Practitioner decides to ‘battle test’ the recruitment system? 🤔

This year, I registered with an online recruitment platform as a candidate to test the experience for mature workers.

Despite my extensive skills – both digital and non-digital – I couldn’t secure even one basic gig.

It was confronting. But it confirmed what I suspected: age discrimination is at play in online recruitment. 😔

I shared my findings publicly and kept saying to my network: “Please don’t give up!” 🌟

So I didn’t. And neither should you.

✅ Beyond advocacy, 2025 included:

📻 Media appearances on ABC Radio National, 3AW Melbourne, 4BC Brisbane and Channel Nine’s Today Extra discussing careers, LinkedIn, AI in recruitment and workplace culture

🎓 Workshops for Career Development Association Australia, Educate Plus (in sensational Adelaide!), Bendigo Professionals and regional business groups across Australia and New Zealand

✍️ 10 poems published including ‘Accumulated Grief,’ ‘Kindfulness’ and ‘Tragedy’ – each exploring vulnerability and philosophical reflection

📰 11 Monthly Newsletters (Editions 38-48) with practical guidance and resources

⭐ My top 3 posts from 2025:

1️⃣ CHANGING CAREERS // Mind Map method

2️⃣ JOB FOR NOW // Is it okay to have a job for now?

3️⃣ AGEISM IN RECRUITMENT // Battle testing online platforms
https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7335837838304866304

🌟 3 practical takeaways for you:

☑️ Back up your LinkedIn data regularly – platforms change but your career history shouldn’t disappear
☑️ Use networking, referrals and voluntary work if you face any level of disadvantage in job seeking
☑️ Match every application to the requirements of the role – no need to include every qualification

I am deeply grateful for the 31,500+ followers and 26,600+ connections who engage with my content…

What’s next? I’ll be contacting the Workplace Gender Equality Agency about including age-related data in workplace reporting.

I also earned two badges – the ‘25K Club‘ as 25,000+ people chose to follow me and ‘Community Builder‘ as I attract ‘the best kind of engagement. While others collect quick likes, you get thoughtful comments. Your ratio of comments to reactions puts you in the top 10%.’

Very interesting to see that these high impression posts were mostly a post referencing a LinkedIn Article – no coincidence there I am quite sure although it is pleasing to see that these older Posts are still performing well!

Personal Reflections

As Coauthor Studio suggests, it is a great privilege to appear in the media and this year, I appeared on Channel Nine’s Today Extra from Perth, on 3AW 693AM Radio seven times, various ABC Radio Stations across Australia seven times, as well as multiple mainstream media newspapers including the Newscorp Stable, the Daily Mail and The Senior.

I have created 24 LinkedIn Shorts Videos and five free webinars (with slides and recordings) and appeared on three podcasts. I have also listed a variety of my events on LinkedIn and still attend between one and four events per week. This year, I also completed three terms of study at the Melbourne School of Philosophy.

Before the end of the year, I will be publishing my 49th monthly newsletter. My Sue Ellson Shares LinkedIn Newsletter now has 7,026 Subscribers and my Sue Ellson Sharing LinkedIn Newsletter has 427 Subscribers. I have published 116 LinkedIn Articles since 7 April 2014 and in 2025, contributed to or published over 138 Publications.

I have delivered 37 public presentations and many other private presentations during 2025 including multiple presentations at independent schools and for school-related associations. It was wonderful to join the team at Directioneering to write and deliver 30 two hour online ‘LinkedIn Fundamentals Workshops’ for people going through the outplacement process and I have volunteered at the Melbourne Career Expo and the Box Hill Institute Careers Expo.

Where possible, I have continued to support the professional associations where I am a member including the Golden Key International Honour Society, the Melbourne Press Club, the Career Development Association of Australia CDAA, the Australian Society of Authors ASA, Writers Victoria and Educate Plus. This has involved attending professional development events and conferences, providing pro bono presentations, consultations and advice as well as promotion and general suggestions and support.

This year, a further 18 poems were shared (with a bulk lot in one post during Poetry month). I launched my first volume of Affirmations too. I entered my writing in 16 Awards or Submission sites – and achieved one successful outcome.

On a happier note, my poems were re-published elsewhere on the internet 64 times in 2025 including in a song! I have created an Audio list of my poems, a Video list of my poems, a list of Poems Performed Live and wrote three Commissioned Poems.

I have also updated my Media Kit, joined Substack and received some amazing Reviews.

I would like to sincerely thank my fabulous clients and students for meeting me either in person or online from across the world (but mostly Australia)!

Overall, I am very grateful that LinkedIn provides both a personal Sue Ellson LinkedIn Profile and a Sue Ellson LinkedIn Page (which now has 1,089 Followers) so that I can share my thoughts and insights with an international audience 24/7.

After all, the ‘label’ I most identify with is ‘Educator’ and as a professional network that provides a safe space to share knowledge, LinkedIn is an amazing resource!

Coauthor Studio Review

Overall, as an AI tool that evaluated my LinkedIn Activity automatically and did not require any input from me, this was a great starting point for me to reflect on the ‘year that was’ on LinkedIn. LinkedIn does not provide a total of reactions, comments and reposts so this was helpful too!

I have already contacted the Workplace Gender Equality Agency and my local Member of Parliament to ask about reporting on the age of employees and will follow up again in 2026.

I could not have provided my analysis without logging in to LinkedIn, checking some details on my SueEllson.com website and digging up some of my own Post records (which most people would not keep).

However, I also think this tool is a very clever way to let people know about their ongoing SAAS platform offering and for the time poor, this could be very handy! The way they created the post to look like I wrote it is very clever!

Thank you Coauthor Studio (I was not paid or asked to write this).
