End Of Year Rush Poem

By Sue Ellson

The end of year
Is coming fast
The end of year
Has me aghast

Everyone rushing
As if time is ending
Everyone risking
Their healthy living

Please take a moment
To stop and focus
Must you do everything
Like hocus pocus

What can wait
What is urgent
What is essential
What is important

Leave the rest
For another day
Slow your speed
Live your way

Smile and observe
What you have achieved
Over the last 12 months
Your blessings received

What challenges have you conquered
What fears have you overcome
A new year is waiting
To see what you’ll become

Pat yourself on the back
So I can share your glee
Another year is nearly over
On the path to truly be

As I left home to catch up with a friend before the end of the year, I drove down a nearby side street and three people nearly stepped out in front of my car. They were so busy rushing around that they must have assumed that there would not be any cars driving past. Before I arrived at the cafe just 10 minutes away, I had another two vehicles make hasty and risky choices that required a defensive response. I was quite frazzled by the time I arrived.

I am the first to admit that I need a deadline to complete most tasks. I can also see that many of us set quite unrealistic deadlines before the end of the calendar year and in the rush to complete those tasks, we risk a lot.

So I have crossed off a lot of the to-do-before-the-end-of-the-year tasks that I had on my to-do list and I have decided that I will only focus on what needs to be done right now. Then after the end of the year, I will set some realistic time frames for what is next. That way, I hope that on the 25th of December, I can enjoy a relaxing and peaceful day and not fall into an exhausted and frazzled heap as I have so often in the past!

Remember that we often over-estimate what we can do in the short term and under-estimate what we can do in the long term. Season’s greetings to you all! With love, Sue Ellson 🙂
