Woman of a Certain Age Poem

Woman of a Certain Age Poem By Sue Ellson

Woman of a Certain Age Poem

By Sue Ellson

I’ve reached an age
Where I just don’t care
I’ve finally realised
Life isn’t fair

As a woman
Of a certain age
I am so much more
Than my increasing rage

The fury I feel
Knows no bounds
I’ve fought the fight
Of so many rounds

I’ve had enough
Of being invisible
My mood remains
A consistent miserable

I constantly see
The trivial and pathetic
So many whingers
Perhaps its genetics

I’ve reached the stage
Where life is changing
My body, mind and soul
Are rearranging

To truly be
Each decision must be mine
My own kind of peculiar
Is ultimately fine

Everyone else
Can go and get stuffed
I need to say
I’ve had enough

Don’t waste my time
With your petty issues
I’ve been there done that
What’s your excuse?

Grow up, grow wise
Grow any way you can
Go wider and further
Make a stand

Be as I am
Perfectly imperfect
From now on
I am worth it

I was inspired to write this poem after chatting with a friend about the UK television series ‘Riot Women‘ about women of a certain age creating a punk band currently screening on SBS On Demand. I enjoyed writing this poem because it includes a lot of the sayings I regularly use – but I will say it is not a full summary of how I truly feel about being a woman of a certain age! With love, Sue Ellson 🙂
